Every Christmas, there is a town celebration (actually held on each of three consecutive weekends). Little booths are set up that sell food; of course, there is schnitzel and beer and hot mulled wine. Santa comes to town and gives out treats and red Santa hats. Big, hollowed logs are placed in an upright position in metal pans and something flammable must be put in them. They are placed throughout the town square, lit like torches, and burn for hours.
Children bring their marshmallow sticks and see how many marshmallows they can get on each stick at one time. When the kids are done with that and the logs have burnt down somewhat, the kids run around hitting the burning logs with sticks; it makes a shower of sparks in the cold night air. Quite festive and pretty but I could not help thinking, they would never allow this in the states--liability being what it is.
