November in Kandern: cold, rain or snow, a few sunny days; for the teachers, creating the midterms and reviewing for the midterms; for the students, essays, completing units of study, preparing for the mid-terms, AND CHRISTMAS BANQUET!
Christmas Banquet is the last all school event (other than the Christmas concert) before the students go home for the holidays. The students have fun preparing for it. Approx. a month before banquet is "shopping day."
Several churches in the United States take on the task of collecting formal dresses and sending them over. One Saturday morning, the girls line up at the school door, and are ushered in in groups of twenties. The girls try on dresses until they find the "perfect" one at no expense ot them. And so it goes for hours.
The day of banquet, staff are busy helping to do hair, iron dresses and take care of emergencies (like the girl who ironed her dress and burned a big iron-size hole in it only hours before banquet).
One staff member spent five hours painting French nails. One library staff member, who worked in a flower shop in the states before she became a missionary, spends about 20 hours making corsages for the banquet, charging only for supplies.
Can you imagine being the mom in a dorm with twenty girls all getting ready at the same time for banquet?
And then the day arrives.
